How to Calculate Brick Quantity

Learn how to calculate the number of bricks required for wall construction. Includes formula, standard brick sizes, and mortar considerations.

Calculating the number of bricks required for a wall is essential for accurate material procurement and cost estimation. The calculation depends on the wall dimensions, brick size, and mortar joint thickness.

The standard brick size in India is 190 mm x 90 mm x 90 mm (approximately 7.5 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches). With a mortar joint of 10 mm, the effective brick size becomes 200 mm x 100 mm x 100 mm. For a 230 mm thick wall (one brick thick), the number of bricks per square metre of wall area is approximately 50 to 55.

To calculate the total bricks for a wall, first determine the wall area by multiplying the length by the height. Then subtract the area of openings such as doors and windows. Multiply the net wall area by the number of bricks per square metre (approximately 50 for a 230 mm wall).

For example, a wall that is 10 feet long and 10 feet high has an area of 100 square feet, which is approximately 9.29 square metres. With 50 bricks per square metre, you need about 465 bricks. Adding 5 percent for wastage brings the total to approximately 488 bricks.

For a 115 mm thick wall (half brick thick), the number of bricks per square metre is approximately 25 to 28. For a 345 mm thick wall (one and a half brick thick), it is approximately 75 to 80 bricks per square metre.

Always add 5 to 10 percent extra bricks to account for breakage, cutting, and wastage during construction. Use our brick calculator for quick and accurate calculations for your specific wall dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bricks are needed for 1 square metre of wall?

For a standard 230 mm thick wall with 190x90x90 mm bricks, approximately 50 to 55 bricks are needed per square metre, including mortar joints.

How much extra bricks should I order for wastage?

It is recommended to order 5 to 10 percent extra bricks to account for breakage, cutting, and wastage during construction.
