Construction Material Checklist
A complete checklist of materials required for house construction. Learn about cement, steel, sand, bricks, and finishing materials.
Having a complete material checklist is essential for planning and executing a construction project. This checklist covers the major material categories required for a typical residential construction.
Cement: The most common cement used in construction is OPC 53 grade or PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement). The quantity depends on the concrete and mortar volume. For a 1,000 sq ft house, approximately 400 to 600 bags of cement may be required.
Steel (TMT Bars): Steel is required for all reinforced concrete elements including foundations, columns, beams, and slabs. Fe500 or Fe550D grade TMT bars of 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm, and 20 mm diameters are commonly used. The total quantity is typically 3 to 5 kg per sq ft.
Sand: River sand or M-sand is used for concrete, mortar, and plastering. M-sand is increasingly preferred due to environmental regulations and consistent quality. The quantity depends on the concrete volume and plastering area.
Coarse Aggregate: 20 mm and 40 mm aggregates are used in concrete. The quantity is calculated based on the concrete volume and mix ratio. Approximately 0.8 to 1.2 cubic metres of aggregate is needed per cubic metre of concrete.
Bricks or Blocks: Traditional clay bricks, fly ash bricks, or AAC blocks are used for wall construction. The quantity is calculated based on the wall area. For a 230 mm wall, approximately 50 bricks per square metre are needed.
Finishing Materials: This includes flooring tiles or granite, wall paint, doors and windows, electrical fixtures, plumbing fixtures, bathroom fittings, and kitchen fixtures. The quality and brand of these materials significantly affect the overall cost and aesthetics.
Waterproofing: Waterproofing compounds, membranes, or coatings are needed for the foundation, bathroom, kitchen, terrace, and water tank areas to prevent seepage and dampness.
Miscellaneous: Other materials include wood for doors and windows, glass, hardware (hinges, locks, handles), pipes (PVC and CPVC), wires, conduits, and construction chemicals such as curing compounds and bonding agents.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much cement is needed for a 1,000 sq ft house?
A 1,000 sq ft house typically requires approximately 400 to 600 bags of 50 kg cement, depending on the construction type, mix ratios, and plastering requirements.
M-sand or river sand, which is better?
M-sand is increasingly preferred due to its consistent quality, environmental sustainability, and availability. River sand may have better workability but varies in quality and is subject to environmental regulations.
